Looking to buy some new clothes for Chinese New Year? Why not get your hands on some limited edition rat-themed T-shirts! ASHREENA PILLAI writes.

CHINESE New Year is almost upon us and you must be wanting to get your hands on some groovy new clothes to usher in the Year of the Rat.

The first animal of the Chinese zodiac, the Chinese characterise the people born in the Year of the Rat as leaders and pioneers. They are supposed to be hardworking, charming, practical, highly ambitious individuals with great leadership skills.
If you are thinking rat, you may want to know about Big Day Out’s Ratty Blossom Collection limited edition T-shirts.

Big Day Out’s founders and designers Gladys Lim and Wong Su Yen wanted to incorporate the rat theme this Lunar New Year.

“Instead of the same old boring designs and colour schemes (red, red and more reds) we decided to play up the mood of the festival by giving it a modern twist,” 28-year-old Gladys chirped.

Check out the really cute T-shirt designs featuring motives like blossoms, birds, and cute little rats to commemorate this Spring festival. “We had many sketches done and picked the best eight designs that we liked and then played with the colour scheme,” Su Yen said, adding that their designs are multi-coloured and cheerful.

The Ratty Blossom Collection T-shirts come in six designs, each in two colours. You can choose from whites, greys, yellows, pinks and greens. The T-shirts are available at mydressroom boutique at RM59.90.

The designs are so appealing you can even wear them the whole year round! And no, you don’t have to been born in the year of the rat to dress in any one of these T-shirts. A big hit with customers is the design of a cute little rodent lighting a firecracker with the words Crack! Crack! Crack!

Graphic designers by profession, good friends Gladys and Su Yen were first inspired to go forward with this venture after working on some designs for their clients. Having been in the advertising field for a few years now, both Gladys and Su Yen have a keen eye for detail.

As for the choice of name, Gladys and Su Yen wanted something that truly reflect their identity. “We wanted a name that represented the spirit of our fashion line. We decided on the name Big Day Out because it symbolises the essence of our line; unique and quirky garments that women would love to parade themselves in for a big day out,” laughed Su Yen

“We also picked mydressroom as our retailer as we like their fashion style,” added Su Yen. “It all started with us visiting mydressroom and we got to talking with the owners (Lee Kai Siew and Phoebe Chow) who liked our idea. And the rest is history,” explained Gladys.

One of Big Day Out’s next project will be a special collection for mydressroom where they plan to come up with a signature mydressroom collection of feminine designs on T-shirts, tank tops and spaghetti tops specially for their favourite boutique and its patrons.

So drop by mydressroom in Bangsar to take a look at Big Day Out’s Ratty Blossom Collection. Besides that, don’t miss out on mydressroom’s February promotion. With a minimum of RM150 spent in a single receipt, patrons are eligible for a RM20 voucher.

mydressroom is at 52-1, Jalan Maarof, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur. Visit www.mydressroom.com.my or www.abigdayout.blogspot.com to find out more.

Labour intensive works

All our fabulous tees has finally arrived and going into the brown packaging. We spend a day on stamping the brand and sorting all the stock. We get the idea of creating a supersized red packet to give a sense of celebrative mood and act as a protective layer for the tees. It's so cute and nice for display on selves. And best of all, you can recycle it!!
